It doesn't seem possible but Bill has been gone for seven months. And there are times that I miss him a lot. Especially times like his birthday or even when I hear his song "The Rose" play on the radio. In fact the other day I was driving and that song came on and I found myself driving with tears streaming down my face.
During the last few months I've been thinking of the good that came out of his having Alzheimer and the good that has come about since his death.
Alzheimer changed me. I learned to really listen. I learned to seize the moment and to cherish the good times. My priorities changed.
Last night I was the mistress of ceremony for a fundraiser in Bill's name. The money raised to go for scholarships for the safe return bracelet and to educated first responders on how to deal with people with Alzheimer. I think Bill would have been proud of me. Me a private and basically shy person up in front of people.
I've learned that some things that I perceive as being bad are not really bad at all as good can come out of these situations.
Because Bill had Alzheimer now people who have it will have Safe Return alert devices with tracking chips. First responders will be trained in how to handle people with Alzheimer and to look for the devices. Next year there will be another fundraiser and perhaps some other fund raisers too.
Bill told me he loved the song "The Rose" because to him it was about love being there for a person. He told me that someone would be there for me after he left who would love me as much or more than he did. Someone new is now in my life. Although I miss Bill because of his love I can now move on into another relationship.
