When dealing with people who have Alzheimer you have to have a sense of humor. You also have to have the sense to know when to not laugh. Another requirement is to have loads of patience.
Words become all jumbled in the brain and some of the funniest things are sometimes said. (Once in awhile he realizes that he said some thing funny and starts laughing and then I can laugh along with him) Sometimes he says some very poetic things. In fact, I must confess that sometimes lately I take some of his words and use them for the basis of some of my poems.
In a way it is funny to see him watering the sidewalk when I tell him to water the pots. But it is also sad. And I know it hurts his feelings when he notices me watering the pots.
It struck me as funny yesterday to walk into a fitting room and discover that he had put the new jeans right over the old jeans he was wearing. Of course he did not know why in the first place he had to try the jeans on before buying them. But then that is probably a man-thing. (I did not laugh but later cried as I realized how much he has deteriorated since the last clothes-shopping trip.)
Shopping can sometimes be a fun experience and other times it is worse than going shopping with a two year old who wants you to buy all the candy and toys in the store. There are times I go through the check-out with only a shred of patience left.
He has misplaced his glasses so he is wearing an old pair. The other day he was complaining that he needed a new pair because he just could not see with the old pair. I told him I realized that he needed a new pair of glasses but we do not have the money right now to purchase them. Then I looked at his face and noticed that he was not wearing his old glasses but a pair of mine.
My prayer these days are for a sense of humor and patience.
